Types of TBMs Different types are tailored to specific geological conditions: Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs Ideal for soft ground with water presence; they balance pressure using excavated soil itself. Slurry Shield TBMs Used for water-saturated soils; they maintain face stability with pressurized slurry that is filtered and recycled. Hard Rock TBMs (Gripper or Double Shield) Used in solid rock conditions. Gripper TBMs anchor to the tunnel wall and move forward using hydraulic jacks, while double-shield types provide added support mechanisms. Open-Face TBMs Suitable only for stable rock conditions where the ground can support itself temporarily.
